What is the Mindful Business Charter?
The Mindful Business Charter is a community of businesses (legal and otherwise) committed to reducing the unnecessary stress in the ways we work to enable healthier and more effective ways of working – addressing the causes of much of the distress experienced.
Why should we have one?
Stress impacts our health, it costs lives, and it makes us and our businesses less productive. Much of our stress is caused by the way we work and interact with each other; the unconscious, unnecessary and often unnoticed impact we have.
How do we implement it?
By identifying the causes of unnecessary stress, we can work to eradicate them, leading to healthier, more productive workplaces.
Small changes makes a big difference.
The four pillars
The Mindful Business Charter is a practical framework that encourages us to be more thoughtful about the impact we have on each other. It allows us to talk openly and honestly with others, by providing a common language built on four pillars.
Our commitment
- Drive forward the actions and change necessary to support the Mindful Business Charter.
- Promote a culture where people can speak up early about any concerns that they might have with their wellbeing (or the wellbeing of colleagues).
- Make performance against the Mindful Business Charter / responsible business a priority standing agenda item for all client and supplier relationship review meetings.
- Ensure responsible business is included as an area of assessment during significant procurement processes.
- Once established, introduce the Mindful Business Charter to new members and report annually on our broader activity to the Mindful Business Charter community.
Addressing the mental health challenges in legal practice
A statement of best practice, for firms, and in-house counsel. The guidance focusses primarily upon the following factors:
- Persistent long-term stress;
- Persistent and unpredictable long hours of work without adequate breaks and rest;
- Lack of sleep;
- Disconnection from loved ones and other emotional supports.
